Cameron White faces end of first-class career after Victoria release

Former Australia batsman Cameron White has not been offered a contract with Victoria for next season but is hopeful of continuing his career in the BBL.

White, 35, played in Victoria's and Melbourne Renegades' unprecedented Australian domestic treble this season featuring in both the JLT One-Day Cup and Sheffield Shield titles for Victoria and the BBL title for the Renegades, but he was dropped by both sides during the season.

Both Victoria and the Renegades have confirmed White has not been offered a contract at either domestic or BBL level for the 2019-20 season.

White told RSN radio he is hoping to have a playing and coaching role at a BBL club next season. A number of non-Victorian BBL clubs, including Perth Scorchers, had spoken to White but the Adelaide Strikers appear to be his likely destination, although he could not reveal it.

"I'm not going to Perth I don't think, look, I'm still keen to play Big Bash so I'm pretty confident that things are looking pretty promising there," White said. "I can't tell you where I'm going but playing a bit of Big Bash and tying in a bit coaching is the path I want to head. I think it will probably be a good in the way to get out of Victoria, experience a new group of people. It's a great opportunity to learn from some new people that I haven't had anything to do with at all really. I think if I want to coach that's the sort of thing I'm going to have to do eventually."

It appears unlikely he will play first-class or List A cricket again. He finishes with six Sheffield Shield titles for Victoria, including three as captain, and a one-day title after debuting as an 18-year-old in 2001. He is Victoria's longest serving captain having led his state in 77 first-class and 77 List A games after first being handed the role as a 20-year-old.

"The list management decision-making process has not been an easy one," Victoria's general manager of cricket Shaun Graf said. "Naturally we've looked at the depth in our squad, the talented youth emerging and the international availability of our senior players next season. As a result, we've had to make a very hard decision on Cameron's playing tenure with Victoria."

White said he was keen to move on pretty quickly despite feeling he could still contribute for Victoria.

"It's very disappointing when you get that sort of news," White said. "I still thought I had a little bit to offer playing and off the field as well. It was very disappointing at the time but you have to move on pretty quickly. It would be silly of me to going around kicking cans and not concentrate on the next phase of my life now."

White also played four Tests, 91 ODIs and 47 T20Is matches for Australia. He led Australia in six T20 internationals in 2011 and stood in as captain for one ODI in the same year.
